The Khan Academy is Rewriting the Book with AI
I recently read/listened to Sulman Khan’s “Brave New Worlds: How AI will revolutionize Education (and Why That’s a Good Thing)”. There are few names in the modern education landscape more deeply rooted than Khan Academy. Salman Khan’s original vision of “a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere” began with humble videos and a hungry curiosity to reach beyond the four walls of the classroom. Today, Khan Academy is a digital ally for learners everywhere. Today, Khan Academy is a digital ally for learners everywhere. Step inside any virtual classroom and you will find children, teens, parents, job seekers, and curious adults side by side, all benefiting from one of the richest open educational resources around. In this blog post, I’ll outline the good with the bad…Nothing’s perfect. There are some takeaways after interacting with the book I’d like to comment on.

Khan Academy: The Who and Where
Khan Academy is not just another online hub. It is the meeting ground for overworked students, parents helping their children with decimals, professionals brushing up on statistics, and the kind of lifelong learner who wakes up craving calculus. Web browser, app, classroom projector; you name it, Khan Academy has it covered. It is a truly global brand, reaching from bustling city schools to quiet homes all over the world. Detractors often reference the niche suitability of the courses and curriculum: The platform is generally best suited for middle and high school students. For elementary or very young learners, both content and delivery style may be inappropriate or difficult to engage with.
Khanmingo: The AI Engine that Refuses to Be Ordinary
Two years ago, Khan Academy launched Khanmingo, an artificial intelligence engine designed not just to deliver answers but to guide students through the twists and turns of learning. Think of Khanmingo as your personal mentor, always ready with a question, a nudge, or even a joke when the going gets tough.
Khanmingo adapts to all platforms, whether you are stealing a few minutes on your phone or deep diving into algebra on a laptop. The engine works behind the scenes, transforming what could be a cold interaction into playful, patient learning. Salman Khan writes in his book Brave New Worlds, “AI is like having a million teachers for a billion students.” This is the heart of Khanmingo’s promise: to individualize every learning journey, from basic fractions to nuanced essays.
Over the past year, Khanmingo has grown nimbler. It offers real-time feedback, keeps pace with teachers building custom lessons, and supports parents seeking clarity during homework hijinks. It even extends its reach into coding, social studies, and humanities. As Salman puts it with his signature wit, “AI does not get tired in the afternoon, and it never forgets your birthday. That is the patience we have always wished for in education.”
Despite growth, many Khan Academy promotes rote learning: Many critics point out that Khan Academy's video lectures and exercises often encourage memorization rather than fostering deep understanding or problem-solving skills. An additional critique points out that inconsistent pedagogy: Experts argue that many Khan Academy videos do not reflect a strong understanding of how learners build knowledge. The videos can be disorganized, with examples chosen seemingly at random, and may not anticipate typical student misconceptions. There are few elements that derail a successful learning experience than inconsistencies within the same learning program or curricula. Overall, Khanmigo has made Khan Academy more interactive and personalized by providing real-time, guided tutoring that reduces rote learning and improves feedback. However, some issues like occasional errors, limited group learning, and incomplete pedagogical depth remain.
How Khanmingo Handles Cultural and Language Diversity
One of the foundational challenges in global education is bridging language and cultural gaps. Khanmingo rises to the occasion in several ways.
First, it is language-friendly. Khanmingo interacts in multiple languages and continually learns from the vast array of dialects and expressions that learners bring to the table. Whether a student’s first language is Spanish, Hindi, Mandarin, or English, Khanmingo seeks to provide context, clarity, and support, making sure no learner feels lost in translation.
Second, it tackles different styles of learning across cultures. Khanmingo recognizes that learners bring varied expectations into the classroom. Some cultures value debate and self-expression, while others emphasize collaboration or meticulous skill-building. The AI engine is programmed to adapt its teaching strategies, buttons, and prompts based on user data and feedback, allowing it to foster both independence and teamwork as needed.
Furthermore, Khan Academy partners with educators worldwide to gather feedback that helps refine Khanmingo for local contexts. For example, if teachers report that students prefer group problem-solving versus individual drills, Khanmingo can reshape its prompts and practice modules accordingly. In doing so, Khanmingo honors what Salman Khan describes as “the dignity of every student’s starting point,” making education feel like a conversation rather than a script.
Personalization: How Khanmingo Makes Every Learner Unique
If there is one principle that sets AI tools apart in education, it is personalization. Khanmingo does not subscribe to the one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, it tailors lessons, hints, and motivational nudges to each learner’s pace, interests, and stumbling blocks.
Suppose a student breezes through algebra problems but struggles with word problems. Khanmingo notices the patterns, offering focused practice where it is most needed and shifting the challenge dial up or down depending on responses. For another learner who might be shy about mistakes, Khanmingo gently encourages risk-taking, shows progress growth over time, and celebrates small victories as loudly as big ones.
Khanmingo uses performance analytics to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses, adapting feedback and resources so each learner gets a custom-fit experience. Teachers can use these insights to offer hands-on coaching, while learners feel seen and supported—not just another data point in a system log. As Salman Khan points out in Brave New Worlds: “Real personalization in education means never having to pretend you need to keep up with the next desk. You are the curriculum. The lesson meets you where you are.”
It is worth noting that some detractors point to “Limited interactivity: The platform generally lacks the responsiveness and engagement of live instruction. Students receive pre-recorded explanations, with little immediate feedback or opportunity to ask clarifying questions, undermining the importance of the use of “community of practice” and the necessity of interaction when learning.
This commitment to personalization turns Khanmingo into a coach, tutor, and cheerleader rolled into one. It helps learners build confidence, resilience, and independence—qualities as valuable in the boardroom as in the classroom.
Executive and Managerial Careers: AI-Powered Professional Growth
Khan Academy, with Khanmingo as its AI backbone, is reaching into the realm of career development. For executives and managers, customized modules in leadership, organizational strategy, and decision-making are now available. Simulated scenario training helps professionals tackle ethical quandaries and difficult conversations with hands-on guidance from the AI engine.
Khanmingo makes it easy to rehearse communication skills, get instant feedback, and reflect on outcomes. The engine even tracks performance over time, helping leaders find and embrace their blind spots in pursuit of true wisdom. As Salman writes, “Humility in a CEO looks a lot like humility in a ninth grader learning algebra. Khanmingo is there to make both possible.”
Looking Forward: Lifelong Learning for All
Khan Academy and Khanmingo have set out to build a world where learning never ends. For the student solving equations, the executive refining her negotiation style, or the parent rediscovering the wonders of science, Khanmingo is more than just an AI—it is a patient companion, a tireless cheerleader, and an advocate for curiosity.
As Salman Khan urges in Brave New Worlds: “Imagine a world where AI guides you to wisdom every day. That is not just education, it is transformation.” With Khanmingo at our side, we can see that future just over the academic horizon.
